When I’m ready to escape Colorado’s cold and snow, Cancun, Mexico is an easy getaway because of the direct flights you can take from Denver International Airport. But I’m not someone who can just book the first resort I see – I need to do my homework. After hours of researching all-inclusive hotels, Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort checked all the boxes for our family vacation for our most recent trip.

What stood out? It’s located outside the Hotel Zone (a big plus for me), it’s designed with all the amenities a family could want, and it seemed to have a lower risk of sargassum – the gross seaweed that can ruin a beach day (more on that below!).

Here’s my full review so you can decide if it’s right for your next trip.

About Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort

Dreams Playa Mujeres is part of the Hyatt Inclusive Collection, located north of Cancun on a stretch of white-sand beach along the Caribbean Sea. With over 500 rooms, it’s one of the larger Dreams properties and offers something for everyone – multiple pools, a water park, lazy river, kids club, spa, golf course, and a fitness center. The resort is part of the Dreams chain, which is advertised as family-friendly, and it is also part of a “vacation club”, so you most likely will be asked to attend a presentation and become a member. However, you don’t need to be a member to stay.

HOT TIP: If you collect Hyatt points, you can book this resort using your rewards!

It’s an all-inclusive resort, so you’ll get unlimited dining, top-shelf drinks, room service, beach and pool service, and more. We opted for the Preferred Club upgrade, which added perks like a private beach area, upgraded room, and access to a special lounge with food, additional wine options, and spirits.

Location

Dreams Playa Mujeres is about 30 minutes from Cancun International Airport and located in the gated community of Playa Mujeres, about 10 miles north of the Hotel Zone. While it’s not walkable to shops or restaurants off the resort, we appreciated that the long stretch of beach and seclusion. A few notes on the location:

  • North of Cancun can get windy, especially in winter months.
  • Sargassum is known to be a problem across the area, but the resort kept it under control better than others I’ve researched. The resort had people and tractors out every morning to clean up the beach. It wasn’t completely absent, but it didn’t ruin the beach experience either.

Rooms

We booked a Junior Suite with Partial Ocean View as part of the Preferred package. It was perfect for our family of four – spacious, clean, and quiet. The kids loved the hot tub on the balcony, and the pull-out sofa was a great bonus. The stocked mini bar with drinks and snacks was also a nice touch.

Despite the resort’s size, our room was conveniently located near the restaurants, pools, and beach. It was easy to navigate and there were elevators for those who didn’t want to take the stairs.

Food and Drinks

There are plenty of dining options at Dreams Playa Mujeres, including the main buffet, six à la carte restaurants, a poolside grill, and a coffee and ice cream shop. Our favorite meal was at Fusion, the hibachi restaurant – the experience was fun and delicious for the whole family. The Preferred package also gave us access to Maris for breakfast, where I fell in love with their avocado toast.

Overall, the food was solid with something for even picky eaters. There was a wide selection at the buffet and different themed nights so there was variety over the week. For those times you want to stay in, room service is included.

Drinks were what you’d expect from an all-inclusive: plentiful, and a little watered down. The Preferred lounge had better-quality spirits and wine. Bars were conveniently located all over the resort so it was easy to refill!

Amenities

This resort is packed with things to do. In fact, we didn’t leave once during our weeklong stay! Highlights included:

  • Multiple pools, including a large activity pool and one for adults-only
  • Lazy river (for Preferred guests, but no one was checking)
  • Water park with slides for kids
  • Lovely stretch of beach with chairs and bali beds for Preferred guests
  • Well-equipped fitness center
  • Spa with top-notch massages

We didn’t play golf, but the resort does offer discounted rates. My husband and kids did the dolphin experience (run by an outside operator), and they enjoyed it, but it is not something we would do again.

Entertainment

There’s no shortage of entertainment. The resort had evening shows and theme nights that were suitable for all ages, and cooking classes, and wine and tequila tastings keep things fun for adults. There’s even a sports bar and disco if you’re up for late-night.

The Kids Club is divided into two groups, the Explorer’s Club (younger) and Core Zone (tweens and teens) and are some of the best I’ve seen – offering everything from video games and basketball courts to climbing walls and organized activities. Because it is open until late into the evening, for parents of younger kids, it would be a great option for a date night.

Our family also loved hanging out in The Zone (which is not part of the Kids Club), a spot with games like pool tables, air hockey, and an arcade, and non-alcoholic drinks.

Final Thoughts

We had a fantastic stay at Dreams Playa Mujeres. Because of the added benefits, the Preferred Club upgrade was worth it for us, and we appreciated the wide range of activities, great service, and relaxing atmosphere. The resort is not inexpensive, but everything from the rooms, amenities, and food to the service was better quality than the less expensive all-inclusive resorts I’ve stayed at…. in other words, you get what you pay for at Dreams Playa Mujeres.

Who Should Stay at Dreams Playa Mujeres?

I would absolutely return to Dreams Playa Mujeres. The resort offers great value, a wide range of amenities, attentive service, and plenty of activities designed to keep the whole family entertained. It’s an ideal destination for a fun and memorable vacation, whether you’re traveling with kids, teens, or grandparents. In fact, it’s particularly well-suited for multi-generational trips, with something to enjoy at every age. Book your stay.

That said, if I were planning an adults-only getaway, I might choose a different resort. Because Dreams Playa Mujeres is designed to appeal to all age groups, the dining and entertainment—while very good—are tailored to a broader audience. For a more refined, adults-only experience, I’d recommend checking out Secrets Resorts, which are part of the same resort group. They offer an elevated atmosphere specifically curated for adult travelers.
